Senator Mary Le Hegarat

Minister for Environment, Agriculture & Fisheries

Following a career involving finance, as a qualified accounting technician, Mary joined the States of Jersey Police in 1989.

Mary had a successful career working across multiple departments; Uniform operations, Community, Criminal investigations, Professional Standards, Public Protection, on call Detective Inspector and Chief Inspector. She was a qualified trainer, delivering law and practical skills to Police officers, alongside qualifying in recruitment and selection.

Mary also completed Chief Inspector duties supervising 100 staff, dealing with all matters involving welfare, productivity and discipline. Being a frontline officer provides her with a strong understanding in relation to poverty, substance dependence and the everyday challenges that people face in their lives.

Mary qualified as a senior investigating officer, in both crime and serious road traffic collision, which provided her the following skills in complex logistics and resource allocation; security and risk management, stakeholder coordination, crisis decision making, institutional governance and accountability.

Mary is used to dealing with all types of emergencies and making strategic decisions to ensure that action is taken quickly but balanced with the evidence which is provided.

Since joining the States Assembly in 2018 have taken the following roles:

·         Minster for Justice & Home Affairs
·         Minister for Environment, Agriculture & Fisheries.
